Government to Support Solar Power Expansion Through Rooftop Installations

Dhaka:Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin announced that the government will fully support the expansion of solar power through the installation of panels on private and institutional rooftops. This initiative is part of a long-term plan to increase solar energy usage in the country.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amin made these remarks during a seminar on solar power, emphasizing the government's encouragement for individuals and institutions to install solar panels based on their capacity and feasibility. He highlighted that the government's solar power target is part of a strategic plan developed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman years ago, which is now being implemented at various levels.

The seminar, titled “Leading by Example Scaling Rooftop Solar in Public Sector,” was part of the “Bangladesh Solar Expo-2026” held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. MA Muhit also attended the event.

Amin noted that even before becoming Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman prioritized solar energy to achieve energy independence. He also mentioned that Rahman had installed solar panels on his residence's rooftop as a personal initiative after taking office. The government's current policies reflect Rahman's long-standing vision for solar energy expansion.

Initiatives are underway to extend solar power facilities to over one lakh educational institutions across the country. The government plans to cover all educational institutions suitable for solar installations within six months and has already adopted plans for solar projects at more than 30 public universities.

Amin stressed the importance of a coordinated process for solar power expansion, with the private sector playing a key role in implementation. The government is developing an enabling ecosystem by facilitating necessary financing and capital management. Special emphasis is also placed on increasing local solar panel production and expanding related industries.

The seminar was attended by several notable figures, including Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board Chairman retired major general Md Mahbubul Haque, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority Chairman agriculturist Hasan Zafir Tuhin, Economic Relations Division’s additional secretary AKM Sohel, Asian Development Bank Deputy Country Director Akira Matsunaga, and Solaric Director Engineer Naznin Akter.
