Dhaka: The interim government has established a high-level committee tasked with ensuring the fair pricing of sacrificial animal hides and the seamless coordination of activities related to the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festivities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the committee is responsible for overseeing the proper collection and preservation of animal hides, ensuring an adequate supply of salt, setting fair prices for hides, and managing overall sacrificial activities. The Cabinet Division issued a gazette on Tuesday announcing the formation of this committee.
Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin has been appointed as the convener of the committee. The body includes advisers on home affairs, industries, road transport and bridges, environment, forest and climate change, local government, fisheries and livestock, religious affairs, and information and broadcasting. Additional members of the committee include the chief adviser's special assistant (home ministry), the executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the chief adviser's press secretary, and the secretary of the Ministry of Industries.
The government plans to incorporate representatives from NGOs, religious institutions, and the private sector to further support the committee's efforts. The commerce secretary will serve as the member secretary, ensuring the committee's operations are efficiently managed.
Moreover, the committee aims to safeguard the financial interests of religious institutions regarding earnings from hide sales. It will also issue guidelines for cattle market operations, regulate the smooth transportation of animals, and devise action plans for effective waste disposal across the country, including at the Savar Leather Industrial Park.
The Ministry of Commerce will provide necessary secretarial support, and the committee will have the flexibility to co-opt additional members as needed. The committee is set to take effect immediately, underscoring the government's commitment to a well-organized and efficient Eid-ul-Azha celebration.
