Dhaka: The High Court has issued a rule questioning why punitive measures should not be taken against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin for his alleged failure to comply with a court order. This development emerged from a session held on Sunday, highlighting concerns over the CEC’s inaction.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the rule was issued by the High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan. This action follows a contempt petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond. Advocate Eunus Ali, representing the petitioner, informed the court that on August 27 of the previous year, the High Court had directed the CEC to address a petition submitted by the Krishak Sramik Janata Party, a political party, seeking registration.

Despite the court’s directive, the order was not implemented, resulting in significant delays. Advocate Eunus Ali emphasized that the non-compliance with the court’s directive necessitated the filing of a contempt of court petition against the CEC, which subsequently led to the issuance of the rule.
