HC upholds death of one in Keraniganj Abdullah murder trial

The High Court (HC) today upheld the death of one and acquitted another in a case lodged over the murder of child Abdullah in suburban Keraniganj area in 2016.

The court also ordered to hold trial of another convict afresh.

A High Court division bench of Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar passed the order after holding hearing on death reference and jail appeals of the convicts.

The court upheld the death sentence of fugitive convict Khorshed Alam, acquitted Mitu Akter, who was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, and ordered fresh trial of another (under aged) convict, who had been sentenced to 10-year imprisonment under children act.

"The High Court ordered fresh trial of that under aged convict at juvenile court," Deputy Attorney General Md Monirul Islam told newsmen.

According to the case documents, Abdullah, 11, went missing on January 29, 2016 in village Mugarchar under Ruhitpur union in Keraniganj. The convicts strangled him to death and hid it inside a barrel. They however, realized Taka two lakh in ransom from Abdullah's family for his freedom.

Finally on February 2, 2016, his almost decomposed body was recovered from the house of Motahar Hossain. Motahar was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion on February 7.

Dhaka 3rd Speedy Trial Tribunal on June 14, 2017, convicted and sentenced Khorshed to death on June 14, 2017, Mitu Akter to one-year jail and another juvenile convict to 10-year imprisonment.
