Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today stayed for three months a lease notice of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) that allowed setting up a market for sacrificial cattle in the capital’s Meradia area ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The court also issued a rule, asking authorities concerned to explain why that notice shall not be declared illegal.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a High Court Division Bench of Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Aynun Nahar Siddiqua passed the order after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard. Advocate Liton Ahmed moved the plea before the court. Barrister Khurram Shah Murad, a counsel for the pleader, informed newsmen that the DSCC notice was unexpected due to the lack of vacant space for a cattle market in the area. He highlighted concerns about public suffering and restricted access for emergency services, such as ambulances, if the market were allowed to proceed.

The DSCC had issued a lease notice on April 21, permitting the establishment of markets for sacrificial animals in 11 areas. The decision was challenged by local inhabitant Shahabuddin Shikder through a writ petition, leading to the HC’s intervention.
