HC postpones verdict on Gazipur mayor’s suspension

The High Court today postponed the date for delivering a verdict on a writ filed challenging the validity of the suspension order made against Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Jafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order fixing May 2 as the next day for hearing.

As the state again pleaded for time today, the court fixed the date afresh.

On September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments about Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the Liberation War during a program went viral on social media.

On November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Jahangir Alam from the party over the incident. He was also suspended from the post of GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later.

The High Court issued a rule following a writ filed by Jahangir, asking why the decision of the LGRD ministry suspending Jahangir from the mayoral post would not be declared illegal.
