HC issues rule against journalist torture in Madaripur

DHAKA, April 9, 2017 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking the officials concerned to explain as to why it shall not order to take actions against those who tortured a journalist in Kalkini, Madaripur on April 7.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah issued the rule, asking Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police's Dhaka Range, superintendant of Madaripur police, Kalkini upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and officer in-charge of Kalkini Police Station to submit their explanation in four weeks.

The court also asked the IGP to initiate a probe into the matter by an official equivalent to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) and submit the report within 30 days.

The court set May 14 for further hearing on the rule. The HC issued the rule suo moto, as the reports of torture of upzila correspondent Shahidul Islam of daily Jai Jai Din drew its attention.
