Dhaka: Civil Aviation and Tourism adviser A F Hassan Ariff emphasized the importance of organizing Pitha festivals nationwide to promote culinary tourism among both local and foreign tourists. He expressed his hopes that such events would not only introduce these traditional cakes to younger generations but also preserve their cultural significance. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser made these remarks during the inauguration of a three-day 'Pitha Festival' organized by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation at the Tourism Cafeteria of the Bangladesh Secretariat. He highlighted that pithas are more than just culinary delights; they represent tradition, craftsmanship, and celebration. Hassan Ariff noted that pithas, an essential part of Bengali heritage, are a fusion of culinary art, culture, and festive joy. He remarked on the long-standing tradition of Bengalis crafting these complementary foods alongside staple diets, with pithas holding a distinctive place of prominence. These traditional delicacies, he added, are not merely food items but markers of rural heritage and women's artisanal skills. However, he warned that the tradition of making and sharing pithas is gradually diminishing amid urbanization and the fast-paced nature of modern life. He reiterated that 'Pitha' is not merely a foodstuff but a symbol of heritage, joy, and celebration, and emphasized its utmost social importance in Bengali culture. Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Nasreen Jahan, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Saima Shaheen Sultana, and other ministry officials attended the event. The three-day festival provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy a variety of Pithas at affordable prices.
