Dhaka: Md Mahfuj Alam, a key figure behind the July 2024 Uprising that toppled the Awami League regime, has criticized the government’s handling of Indian aggression. Mahfuj Alam, recognized as a pivotal leader in the movement, played a crucial role in maintaining its momentum despite heavy government crackdowns. His efforts were acknowledged by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at a significant global forum.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj Alam was born in 1995 in Lakshmipur and pursued his education in madrasa before attending Dhaka University for law. While at university, he engaged in cinema and literature activities, contributing to the intellectual foundation of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which he later helped lead. His involvement in the movement culminated in his appointment as a special assistant and later as an adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In a detailed interview with BSS, Mahfuj Alam discussed the inevitability of the July Uprising, attributing it to a series of political failures and divisions orchestrated by the Awami League. He highlighted the government’s alienation of opposition parties and the impact of Indian border aggression as key factors in the public’s unrest. The Uprising, according to him, was a response to a prolonged period of political repression and electoral manipulation.

He addressed the unity among diverse ideological groups during the movement, emphasizing the cultural understanding that bridged traditional divides. This unity, he noted, was crucial in overcoming previous disagreements that had hampered earlier movements. Mahfuj Alam also explained the strategic decision to bring forward fresh faces like Nahid Islam, which helped maintain the movement’s momentum and avoid direct confrontations.

Mahfuj Alam expressed optimism about the ongoing ‘Truth and Reconciliation’ process, despite the slow judicial proceedings. He believes that acknowledging past wrongs and seeking forgiveness are essential steps towards healing and reforming the state’s political culture. He urged for a new political settlement, emphasizing the importance of respecting opposition parties to foster a genuine democratic environment.

The interview concluded with Mahfuj Alam reflecting on the need for political reform, advocating for a culture that transcends traditional practices and embraces inclusivity. He underscored the importance of creating space for rival political entities to ensure a stable and democratic state, aligning with the aspirations of the mass uprising.
