Jashore: The 25th death anniversary of Shamsur Rahman, a renowned journalist from the south-western region, was observed with various programmes today. Shamsur Rahman, who was the Bureau Chief of the daily Janakantha, was tragically gunned down by a group of miscreants at his bureau office on July 16, 2000.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, journalists in Jashore have been commemorating this day for the past 25 years. As part of their yearly observance, they wore black badges, offered fateha at Shamsur Rahman’s grave, and held a memorial meeting followed by a doa mahfil. A significant number of journalists participated in these programmes, including President Zahid Hassan Tukon and General Secretary Tawhidur Rahman of the Jashore Press Club. Leaders from both journalists’ unions in Jashore, such as Sajedur Rahman Bakul, Md Akramuzzaman, Habibur Rahman Milon, and S M Farhad, were also in attendance.

The memorial meeting, chaired by Press Club President Zahid Hassan Tukon, saw speakers expressing dissatisfaction and dismay over the delay in the trial of Shamsur Rahman’s killers.
