Dhaka: Police officials today announced that former Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Mohammad Salim has provided 'vital information' regarding the murder of Md Monir, a Jhut trader, during the July Uprising. This development is seen as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Investigation Officer Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan revealed these details in his petition. He has requested that the former lawmaker remain in custody until the investigation is complete. The officer noted that, despite being speech-impaired, Salim communicated critical information through signs and gestures during interrogation. This information is currently being verified to assist the investigation.
The plea was filed as Salim appeared before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Miah's court following the conclusion of his four-day remand in the case. The court subsequently ordered that Salim be sent to jail.
On October 20, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhad Ishtiaq had placed both Haji Mohammad Salim and his elder son, Solaiman Salim, on a four-day remand each for their involvement in the case.
The case statement indicates that Monir participated in a mass uprising rally in the Chankharpul area of the city on August 5, 2024. He was shot and killed on the spot around noon that day.
Monir's widow, Rojina Akter, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on March 14, 2025, naming 351 individuals along with approximately 500 unnamed accused.
Haji Mohammad Salim was apprehended in the capital's Bongshal area on September 1, 2024.
