Dhaka:Grameenphone (GP) has introduced Bangla QR payments at its branded retail stores in partnership with Mutual Trust Bank (MTB). This initiative allows customers to scan the Bangla QR code displayed at GP Experience Centres using a compatible app from a participating bank, mobile financial service provider, or payment service provider to authorize payments directly from their accounts.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the shared national QR standard facilitates payments across participating institutions through a single merchant code, reducing reliance on cash and giving customers more options for payment. The service will initially be available at GP Experience Centres in Gulshan, Bashundhara Residential Area, and Chattogram GEC Mor.
This initiative aligns with Bangladesh Bank's efforts to advance interoperable digital payments through the Bangla QR under the vision of "One Country, One QR," targeting one crore transactions a day. GP's adoption of this system aims to integrate this national ambition into everyday customer transactions.
The service was launched at GP's Gulshan Experience Centre with Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr Md Habibur Rahman attending as the chief guest. MTB Managing Director and CEO Syed Mahbubur Rahman and GP CEO Yasir Azman were also present. Dr Habibur Rahman highlighted that connectivity and technological innovation are crucial for economic growth and financial inclusion, appreciating GP's role in developing a more integrated digital payment ecosystem.
Yasir Azman emphasized the convenience of digital payments, allowing customers to pay directly from their phones without dealing with cash or change, thus promoting financial inclusion and participation in Bangladesh's digital economy. He noted that such efforts are part of supporting the country's trillion-dollar economy vision while creating a smarter future for customers.
Syed Mahbubur Rahman stated that combining the bank's payment expertise with GP's retail reach aims to make everyday transactions more convenient and encourage the broader adoption of digital payments across Bangladesh.
