Dhaka: Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain today announced that the government is open to welcoming genuine international observers for the upcoming national election, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Bangladesh’s image. ‘We will definitely encourage those who want to come as observers. But we do not want anyone to come intentionally to tarnish our reputation in the name of observation,’ he stated during a briefing at the foreign ministry.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Adviser reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent national election, anticipated in early February next year. He highlighted that several international organizations, including the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI), the European Union (EU), and the Commonwealth, have already initiated pre-election assessment missions in Bangladesh.

Touhid expressed optimism about these developments, considering them a positive indication. He mentioned that as the election date approaches, more delegations are expected to visit the country to observe the electoral process. ‘We want election observation to take place so that the transparency, freedom, and fairness of the election are clearly demonstrated before everyone,’ he stated.

Hossain underscored the role of international observation missions in bolstering credibility and confidence in the electoral process, provided their work remains objective and respects national sovereignty. He reiterated that Bangladesh values its engagement with international partners and welcomes constructive cooperation that aids in the country’s democratic and institutional development.

Addressing another query, Touhid Hossain mentioned that Bangladesh has sought the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India via appropriate legal channels and a court order, but a response from India is still awaited. ‘We have followed the legal procedures and requested her return as per the court’s order. Let them examine it from their end. They are yet to reply,’ he said. Bangladesh had sent a diplomatic note to India in December last year, along with supporting documents, formally requesting Hasina’s extradition.
