Govt. taking steps to check child marriage: Rabbi

DHAKA, Mar 5, 2017 (BSS)- Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Miah has identified lack of awareness, illiteracy and poverty as key factors for higher rate of child marriage, reiterating the government's bold steps to check child marriage in the country.

"Child Marriage Restraint Law has been passed to free the country from social menace of early marriage," he told a session on children marriage at the South Asian Parliamentary Platform Meeting in Katmandu, Nepal on March 3, an official release said here today.

Rabbi said, "Lack of awareness, illiteracy and poverty are responsible for higher rate of child marriage. South Asian countries should work together to address these problems to prevent child marriage in the countries."

Referring to the progress of female education in Bangladesh, he said advancement of female education at both primary and secondary levels, providing stipends and free textbooks distribution are eventually contributing to check child marriage.
