Dhaka: Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin announced that the government has successfully dismantled the market syndicate system, following a significant change in power dynamics after last year’s mass uprising. This reform has led to a more inclusive operation of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Commerce Adviser made these remarks during a special programme at the TCB auditorium, which was part of the ‘July Revival Programme’. This event commemorated the student-led July mass uprising. Bashir highlighted several economic achievements, stating that one crore families have received distribution cards, foreign currency reserves have increased from $10 billion to $30 billion, and exports have reached their highest levels in 32 months. He also noted progress in reducing inequality.

The programme, organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, began with a minute of silence to honor those martyred during last year’s uprising. Bashir expressed optimism that structural reforms could pave the way for the next elected government to lead the country towards economic stability and equality.

He acknowledged that the proposed reforms might not be fully realized in the short term but emphasized that efforts are underway to create a suitable roadmap. Bashir highlighted the sacrifices made during the uprising, citing the loss of lives, including those of Riya Gop and Yamin, as a pivotal moment of resistance against injustice.

The special programme featured testimonies from participants of the July uprising, a documentary, and a musical drama. Md. Abdur Rouf, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, and Mahbubur Rahman, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, spoke at the event, stressing the need for sincerity and dedication to build a sustainable and humane state. TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad delivered the welcome address, and uprising participants Ariful Islam Arif and Sayla Akhter Shoshi shared their experiences.
