The present government has taken various steps to ensure development and empowerment of the people with disabilities for mainstreaming them in the society for building a prosperous nation.
The opinion came at a post-rally discussion arranged by the Department of Social Service (SSD) at Town Hall auditorium here on Saturday marking the International and National Day of Persons with Disabilities-2016.
The DSS in association with different organisations working for welfare of the disabled people arranged colorful rally, drawing and sports competitions, cultural programmes and prize distribution ceremony on the occasion.
Government and NGO officials, persons with disabilities, leaders of different organisations working for welfare of the disabled persons, professionals, socio-cultural and human rights activists participated in the rally.
With Deputy Director of DSS Abdur Razzaque in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar addressed it as the chief guest. Civil Surgeon Dr Himangshu Lal Roy spoke as the special guest.
The speakers called for establishing disabled-friendly atmosphere and ensuring rights to education, healthcare and social honour with dignity for the disabled people to properly flourish their inherent talents and abilities.
The chief guest said that the present government had been implementing massive programmes for the disabled persons for mainstreaming them in the society through ensuring their development and empowerment.
He called upon the government and non-government organisations for engaging coordinated efforts in reaching the government assistance to the physically challenged people to ensure their constitutional and human rights through their development.
