Dhaka: The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has provided legal assistance in 4,28,301 cases for underprivileged litigants at the government’s expense since 2009. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to ensure that all citizens, particularly those who cannot afford legal representation, have equal access to justice.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a recently published report on the NLASO website reveals that a total of 12,26,019 individuals across Bangladesh will have received legal assistance by May 2025. Since the inception of the program, 9,78,992 individuals have been assisted through Legal Aid Offices in 64 districts, while 29,168 people have received aid via the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office. Additionally, 29,331 workers have been supported through Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The report also highlights that 1,88,528 people have received guidance and support through the toll-free National Helpline number (16430). The services provided by NLASO are free of charge under the provisions of the Legal Aid Act, underscoring the state’s commitment to upholding the rights of its most vulnerable populations.
