Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to conducting transparent and impartial elections. He emphasized that the administration is tasked with the significant responsibility of ensuring elections that are free from any undue influence.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Asif Mahmud articulated these commitments while addressing journalists at his office located in the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives at the Bangladesh Secretariat. He stressed that any government official involved in politics should resign before the election period to prevent any perception of interference.

The adviser also announced his own decision to resign from the election-time government in order to participate in the upcoming elections, setting an example for others in similar positions. He explained that the term “election-time government” pertains to the administration that takes over after the election schedule is announced. He has yet to decide whether to affiliate with the National Citizen Party (NCP) or another political party, or whether to run for office in Dhaka or elsewhere.

Reflecting on the interim government’s performance, Asif Mahmud acknowledged that while the people have achieved success through mass uprising, it remains challenging to measure the government’s own accomplishments. He noted that commodity prices and law and order have largely been maintained, but ultimately, it is up to the public to assess the government’s successes and shortcomings.

Asif Mahmud concluded by acknowledging that while the government has met several public aspirations, some expectations remain unmet. He affirmed that the administration has endeavored to the best of its ability to meet the people’s aspirations.
