Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has affirmed the government’s commitment to a swift trial in the Ramisa murder case. “This case will be completed within the shortest possible time,” he stated during a workshop titled ‘Integrated Initiatives, Responsibilities and Implementation Strategies in Legal Aid’ held at the BRAC Centre Auditorium in Mohakhali, Dhaka. The event was organized by the Directorate of Bangladesh Legal Aid in collaboration with the BRAC Social Empowerment and Legal Protection Programme.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that the trial duration could be minimized based on past precedents. Responding to questions about the case timeline, he referenced the Asiya murder case in Magura, which concluded a month after the charge sheet filing. He also cited the 1948 Muluk Chand case, where the trial concluded in a single day. The minister emphasized the importance of DNA evidence, noting efforts to obtain a DNA report in the Ramisa case within 72 hours, underscoring its priority status.

The minister explained that the trial could commence swiftly if the DNA report and charge sheet are ready before the Eid holidays starting May 25. He expressed the government’s dedication to meeting public expectations both domestically and internationally. “If we move in the wrong direction, you will criticise us and guide us. We will not be reluctant in this regard,” Asaduzzaman added.

Addressing concerns about rising child rape incidents, the minister attributed them to social degradation and assured that law enforcement agencies are actively combating such crimes. He stressed the need for increased social awareness and reinforced public trust in the justice system. Asaduzzaman also noted that while trial courts can issue death penalties, their execution requires higher court approval.

Regarding an incident involving a madrasa student in Netrokona, the minister assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation. The workshop was chaired by Monjurul Hossain, Director General of the Bangladesh Legal Aid Directorate, and featured remarks from Law and Justice Division Additional Secretary Khadem Ul Kayes.
