Dhaka: Prime Minister’s wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman has emphasized the government’s efforts to ensure healthcare accessibility for all citizens. She highlighted these initiatives while addressing a views-exchange meeting at Kurmitola General Hospital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by the hospital authorities to discuss the implementation of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s electoral pledges concerning healthcare equality for general and marginalized people in Dhaka-17. Dr. Zubaida Rahman stressed the historical neglect in the country’s health sector and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive medical services to every citizen.
Dr. Rahman underscored the challenges faced by government hospitals, including excessive pressure, discouraged healthcare workers, and the struggle for millions to access quality healthcare. She pointed out that 72 percent of healthcare costs are borne directly by the people, making illness a significant cause of poverty. The government’s goal is to establish a healthy, productive, self-reliant, and sovereign nation where slum residents in Korail, Bhashantek, and Sat Tala receive the medical attention they need.
She praised the local residents for their contributions to the city’s daily life and the garment industry, while also highlighting that 42.6 percent of residents rely on local pharmacies for health solutions. Dr. Rahman emphasized the importance of dedicated volunteers to inform residents about available services at Kurmitola General Hospital. She called for collaboration between volunteers and hospital members to save lives, noting that healthcare services at the hospital are completely free.
Earlier, she inaugurated new facilities at Kurmitola General Hospital, including a pathology pavilion, gastro-liver center, and a 50-bed ICU. During her visit, she engaged with ICU patients and urged doctors to maintain the highest standard of care.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, and other notable officials also spoke at the event. The Health Minister expressed that Dr. Rahman’s presence signifies accountability and hope for the people, while the Information Minister anticipated significant improvements in healthcare services under the current government. The director of Kurmitola General Hospital highlighted the new ICU’s state-of-the-art equipment and round-the-clock medical services, ensuring prompt and quality treatment for critically ill patients.
