Dhaka: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain today emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of pilgrims. He highlighted the reduction in airfare for Hajj pilgrims by approximately Tk 27,000 last year as part of the government’s initiatives and mentioned ongoing efforts to maintain a reasonable airfare this year as well.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khalid addressed a workshop focused on increasing the number of pilgrims managed by the government for Hajj 2026 at the Ashkona Hajj office. He acknowledged the strong demand for reducing the overall cost of Hajj but explained the limitations faced due to costs determined by the Saudi government. He noted that while it is not feasible to reduce these costs drastically, the government is negotiating airfare and house rent to alleviate expenses for pilgrims.

Dr. Khalid also clarified the government’s non-commercial role in Hajj management, stating that any unspent money from Hajj packages is returned to the pilgrims. “This year, we have refunded Tk 8.28 crore to the pilgrims,” he informed the attendees.

He further elaborated that increasing the number of government-managed pilgrims would enhance the overall management and safety of the Hajj experience. Dr. Khalid urged the workshop participants to actively work towards increasing the number of pilgrims under government management.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, was chaired by Secretary AKM Aftab Hossain Pramanik and addressed by joint secretary Dr. Manjurul Haque. Additional secretaries Md Ayatul Islam, Md Awal Howlader, and Md Imtiaz Ahmed, along with Islamic Foundation director general A Salam Khan, were also present.

Later in the day, Dr. Khalid participated in a discussion, prize-giving ceremony, and prayer session at Dhaka College to celebrate the holy occasion of Eid-e-Miladunnabi (PBUH).
