Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the cable television industry in Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of supporting the entrepreneurs within this sector. “Ensuring protection for any legitimate business initiative is our responsibility. Through proper coordination among stakeholders, we will work to resolve the existing problems in this industry,” he stated during an iftar programme organized by the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) at Dhaka Ladies Club this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Swapan highlighted the critical role of the cable industry and television sector in the modern communication ecosystem. He praised the substantial investments and initiatives undertaken by entrepreneurs, from submarine cable connectivity to delivering household connections at the grassroots level. “As the information minister, it is my duty to understand the problems faced by all parties involved in the industry and find a sustainable solution,” he added.
Addressing technological challenges and the issue of piracy, the minister identified piracy on internet-based platforms, including IPTV and online services, as a global challenge in the digital era. He stressed the necessity of establishing a robust legal framework to protect the interests of legitimate businesses and the government. The minister affirmed that while regulatory oversight would be conducted by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the rights of entrepreneurs must also be safeguarded. “I believe that if a healthy understanding or ‘happy marriage’ is established between the two sides, neither party will suffer,” he noted.
Minister Swapan also expressed his interest in expert-level reviews to tackle the complexities faced by this technology-driven sector. He urged association leaders to present their concerns to the ministry in a well-structured manner and assured them of seeking a permanent structural solution through a tripartite meeting involving the BTRC, the ministry, and other stakeholders. Reassuring business leaders, he emphasized the government’s role in protecting lawful business initiatives and ensuring security for investors in the sector.
The event was attended by Member of Parliament Shofiqul Haque Milon of Rajshahi-3 constituency, COAB leaders including its president and general secretary, and other association members.
