Dhaka: The interim government on Thursday approved the draft of the ‘July Mass Uprising Protection and Liability Determination Ordinance 2026′ which grants indemnity to individuals who took part in the 2024 July Uprising. The decision was made during the Council of Advisers’ weekly meeting at the Chief Adviser’s Office, chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the ordinance is set to be enacted as law through a gazette notification within the next five to seven days. Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul shared this information while addressing the media at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. Present at the briefing were Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.

The ordinance’s primary aim is to provide immunity to those involved in the July mass uprising for actions taken as part of political resistance during July and August 2024. As explained by the Law Adviser, the ordinance is designed to cover activities undertaken to restore democratic governance through the overthrow of the previous fascist regime. Consequently, participants in such activities during the specified period will be exempt from criminal liability.
