Dhaka: Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam, MP, announced the government’s plan to create a modern, technology-based Smart Bangladesh. The statement was made during a meeting with a delegation of leading Chinese technology and telecommunications companies, led by Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, at the minister’s office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister expressed interest in establishing an AI training centre in Bangladesh to provide young people with training on modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized that such training would enable the country’s youth to become integral parts of the information technology revolution. The minister praised China’s enduring cooperation in Bangladesh’s digital advancement, noting the significant contributions Chinese companies have made to the development of the country’s telecommunications and ICT infrastructure.
The minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, technological advancement, and the expansion of digital connectivity. He expressed optimism that the friendly relations between Bangladesh and China would strengthen in the future, opening new opportunities for the welfare of people in both countries.
During the meeting, the Chinese ambassador highlighted that leading Chinese technology companies have been operating successfully in Bangladesh for over three to four decades. He noted that Chinese companies’ investment in Bangladesh exceeds $1.5 billion, with nearly 98 percent of the population now under mobile network coverage due to their technological support. Additionally, the ambassador mentioned that these investments have created over 10,000 employment opportunities.
The ambassador also pointed out that mobile phone manufacturing plants have been established in Bangladesh with the cooperation of Chinese companies, with more than eight million mobile devices being marketed annually. Chinese companies have played a significant role in developing the national ICT network, constructing the national data centre, and implementing digital connectivity projects.
The meeting also discussed the development of the AI sector in Bangladesh and enhancing mutual cooperation in expanding 5G networks, developing digital infrastructure, and technology transfer. Cooperation from Bangladesh was sought regarding various international initiatives related to the International Telecommunication Union, including hosting the World Radio communication Conference 2027 in Shanghai and China’s candidature for the International Telecommunication Union Council and Radio Regulation Board.
The meeting was attended by Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Bilquis Jahan Rimi, embassy officials, and representatives of Huawei and ZTE.
