Chattogram:Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury emphasized the government's commitment to the safety and welfare of working women during his visit to the 'Working Women's Hostel and Labour Welfare Centre' in the Kalurghat Industrial area.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister conducted an inspection tour of the hostel and welfare centre, which includes a five-bed hospital, highlighting the government's focus on coordinating efforts to make the facility operational swiftly.
Minister Chowdhury noted that approximately two lakh workers are employed in the Kalurghat area, with a significant proportion being women. The new facility is expected to address various challenges faced by these women, including safety, accommodation, and access to medical services.
The government has invested hundreds of crores of taka in the development of this facility, although it remains non-operational due to several unresolved issues. Decisions regarding its future use and service to working women will be made after a comprehensive review of legal and technical aspects.
The minister also mentioned that a coordinated decision will be reached through discussions with the mayor, local MP, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the facility serves its intended purpose effectively.
Present during the minister's visit were Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Labour and Employment Ministry Secretary Md. Abdur Rahman Tarafder, officials from the Labour Welfare Organization, representatives from the contractor Sena Kalyan Sangstha, and other local leaders and administrative officials.
