Dhaka: The government has unveiled its strategic plans to enhance the power, gas, energy, and mineral resources sectors, which include the addition of a third floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) before 2028. This announcement was made by Prime Minister's Adviser and Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin during a briefing with journalists following a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and business leaders.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mahdi Amin detailed the discussions held during the meeting, which focused on the development strategies for the power, gas, energy, and mineral resources sectors. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit presented a PowerPoint outlining the government's plans spanning two, five, and ten years for the power and gas sectors.
Amin highlighted the current reliance on two floating storage regasification units, with one having been out of operation for an extended period. The government is working to repair it and plans to increase the number of FSRUs, initially to three and eventually to five. The third FSRU is expected to be operational before 2028, addressing the ongoing gas supply challenges.
In the medium term, approximately 150 gas wells are in the process of being drilled. After the completion of this phase, another 150 wells will be drilled. The government is also pursuing the establishment of land-based LNG terminals and the expansion of gas pipeline infrastructure.
For the power sector, a comprehensive plan focused on diversifying the energy mix with oil, gas, and coal was presented, aiming for self-sufficiency in electricity. Special emphasis is being placed on solar energy as a priority for future developments.
The meeting with business leaders included representatives from 21 business associations, apex bodies, and media personnel, who provided input on various issues. The government emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public sector, private sector, and the business community to drive industrial and economic progress.
Mahdi acknowledged the presence of significant challenges but affirmed the government's commitment to addressing these issues through specific plans for the power and energy sectors. The government is keen on leveraging these challenges as opportunities for strengthening cooperation with business leaders and their associations. Regular consultation meetings are planned to continue in the future.
