Dhaka:Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid announced government initiatives to increase the natural production of indigenous fish species and protect their breeding grounds nationwide.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister highlighted efforts to establish fish sanctuaries across haors, baors, rivers, and even in the sea. He made these remarks while attending a workshop organized by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the capital.

The minister emphasized Bangladesh's rich tradition of fish consumption and the government's achievements in achieving self-sufficiency in fish production, partly due to past quality research. However, he noted that natural fish breeding grounds face threats from climate change and lack of public awareness. Under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's directives, the government is advancing with a significant budget and long-term plan to tackle these challenges.

The workshop also addressed the need for intensified research on fish breeding, breed development, and the recovery of endangered indigenous fish species. The minister called for measures against climate change impacts, prevention of fish diseases, and ensuring the production of quality fish fry. He also emphasized the importance of sustainable practices and public awareness to protect fisheries resources.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku also spoke, advocating for quality standards in fish production and addressing water pollution. He suggested that increased water flow and reduced waterlogging through river and canal excavation would create a conducive environment for fish growth.

The workshop was chaired by BFRI Director General Dr Md Latiful Islam, with various officials, scientists, and stakeholders in attendance.
