Rangpur: The government has launched a program to sell rice at Taka 15 per kilogram to benefit 55 lakh people, as announced by Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumdar during a press briefing at the local circuit house today. The initiative, which commenced on August 17, is part of the government’s food-friendly program aimed at stabilizing rice prices across the nation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the rice distribution is occurring five days a week and currently benefits 10 lakh people across eight districts in the Rangpur division through registered dealers. The government is prepared to increase the quantity of rice sold if necessary. The food adviser highlighted the significant role of the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions as the country’s primary food banks, noting the successful implementation of the largest paddy and rice procurement campaign in the region’s history.

Majumdar assured that there is an adequate stock of food in the depots and stated that permission has been given to import rice through land ports to prevent any potential crisis in the food market. He also warned of legal action against those who might attempt to hoard rice and create an artificial shortage.

Despite sufficient local rice production to meet demand, the decision to import rice was made to cater to the additional needs for feeding livestock and poultry. The adviser observed that the news of rice imports has increased market supply and helped stabilize rice prices.

The continuation of rice import activities will be demand-driven, Majumdar added. He also addressed the high production costs of food items, emphasizing that the government has taken measures to purchase paddy from farmers and rice from traders at fair prices to ensure equitable distribution.

In the morning session, the Food Adviser discussed strategies with stakeholders to control food prices. The meeting was presided over by Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Shahidul Islam.
