Khulna: Administrator of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Md. Firoz Sarkar today announced that they are making every possible effort to address the issue of waterlogging in Khulna city. Highlighting a manpower shortage within KCC, he pointed out that the number of staff is diminishing due to retirements, which impacts their ability to deliver services efficiently.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the administrator made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting held at the GIZ auditorium of the Nagar Bhaban. The meeting, focused on the "Existing Crisis of the Mayur River in Protecting the Environment and Ecology: Current Context of Implementing the Court's Directives," was organized by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA). Professor Tushar Kanti Roy of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) presided over the event.
The administrator emphasized the importance of collective cooperation to save the Mayur River, a significant water-passing river from the city's drains and canals. He acknowledged the educational and valuable opinions shared by the participants and assured that efforts would continue to restore the Mayur River to a healthy state.
Referring to the role of the Water Development Board in river protection, he proposed another seminar involving the Water Development Board, Khulna Development Authority (KDA), and the Roads and Highways Department. On the public inconvenience due to the Gollamari Bridge construction, he shared that the necessary equipment for the bridge had arrived and the construction is expected to be completed by September.
KCC Chief Executive Officer (additional charge) Sharif Asif Rahman, Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, and Executive Engineer Sheikh Md. Masud Karim participated as special guests, while BELA's Divisional Coordinator Mahfuzur Rahman Mukul presented the keynote paper. The event saw attendance from KCC officials, leaders of environmental organizations, civil society, professional bodies, and journalists.
