Dhaka: The government has taken necessary measures to face the power demand across the country in line with earlier plan despite a significant increase in demand caused by the ongoing summer heat, said Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood in Parliament today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister, responding to a starred question from opposition lawmaker Md. Golam Rasul (Jashore-4) during the question-answer session in the house today, stated that the government had adopted a comprehensive power generation plan against the projected electricity demand for 2026. This plan is being executed through coordinated initiatives to ensure adequate supplies of gas, coal, and liquid fuel for power generation.
He highlighted that all major power plants have been prepared for maximum generation capacity through planned maintenance programs. This readiness allows the authorities to meet the increasing electricity demand during the peak summer season effectively. The minister assured that load-shedding is not required due to any shortage in electricity generation, although occasional power disruptions may occur due to emergency maintenance, adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, or both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of transmission and distribution networks.
The government is continuously monitoring the power situation nationwide, taking necessary measures to maintain a stable and reliable electricity supply for households, industries, businesses, and the agricultural sector. Addressing concerns about power supply in industrial and commercial areas, the minister confirmed there is currently no load-shedding in the Nawapara industrial zone or other major commercial centers in the Khulna division.
He informed the House that the present electricity demand of the Nawapara grid under Abhaynagar upazila is 46 megawatts, and this amount is being supplied, ensuring uninterrupted service in the area. Furthermore, electricity was supplied according to demand during the current irrigation season from December to May, aiding farmers in carrying out agricultural activities without major disruption.
While acknowledging that seasonal storms and heavy rainfall occasionally cause temporary power outages in some areas, the minister assured that utility authorities restore electricity supply promptly after weather conditions improve. Iqbal Hassan emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable power supply nationwide through improved fuel availability, efficient grid management, and enhanced operational readiness of power plants.
