Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today announced that the government will maintain its policy of rewarding outstanding performance in crime control while taking disciplinary actions against negligence and misconduct. Speaking to journalists at his secretariat office, Ahmed emphasized the dual approach of incentives and accountability within law enforcement.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister stated, “While police officers will be rewarded for their achievements in combating crime, any negligence or wrongdoing will also be met with reprimand and departmental punishment.” He highlighted the police’s commendable professionalism in rapidly investigating and arresting suspects in several high-profile and complex criminal cases, including the recent rape and murder of Ramisa. The government plans to reward the officers involved in such achievements while ensuring that inactivity or misconduct by any police member is not tolerated.

Ahmed described the verdict in the Ramisa murder case as a historic milestone in the country’s judicial and criminal investigation history, noting the expedited completion of DNA testing, autopsy procedures, and charge sheet submission. He praised the dedication of judicial officials who canceled their Eid holidays to expedite the case, showcasing state and social responsibility.

Regarding the implementation of the court’s verdict, Salahuddin Ahmed mentioned that the government would seek the attention of the Supreme Court and the Attorney General’s Office to schedule the death reference hearing in the Ramisa murder case at the earliest, given the crime’s severity.

The minister also commended the efforts of police personnel stationed at the Goalanda ferry terminal, whose prompt actions reportedly saved the lives of at least 50 bus passengers. He noted the swift resolution of the murder of a teenage girl at Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj and the arrest of the accused.

Referring to the upcoming Director General-level border conference between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF), scheduled to begin in New Delhi on June 8, Ahmed stated that issues like illegal push-ins, border killings, and broader border security concerns would be prioritized. He assured that BGB personnel remain on high alert to resist illegal border crossings.

During a parliamentary party meeting, the minister discussed ongoing operations against crime and narcotics, noting that details of these special operations remain undisclosed for strategic reasons. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to modernize legislation related to narcotics control and gambling prevention to close legal loopholes and ensure stricter punishment for offenders.

Journalists from various media outlets attended the press briefing.
