Dhaka: The government has initiated a series of reforms aimed at modernizing and humanizing the country's prison system, incorporating technology-driven measures and enhancing rehabilitation efforts for inmates.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, sports, cultural programs, religious education, and counseling have been introduced across various prisons to improve the mental well-being of inmates. In a move to enhance communication, video-call facilities have been launched, with Narayanganj District Jail already enabling inmates to connect with their families through video calls.
Md Masud Hasan Jewel, jailer (Logistics and Media) at the Department of Prisons, Dhaka, shared that vocational training is being offered to inmates to develop skills beneficial for their post-release life. Soap production has started at Kashimpur Central Jail-2, and plans are underway to expand such training and income-generating activities.
Healthcare improvements are also on the agenda, with a central prison hospital planned in Keraniganj and a pathology laboratory at the Prison Headquarters. The appointment of 55 diploma nurses is expected to bolster healthcare services within prisons.
Efforts to provide safe drinking water have seen the installation of a mineral water plant at Kashimpur Central Jail-2, benefiting both inmates and staff. Additionally, Dhaka Central Jail has modernized its food preparation by installing a bread-making machine from China, improving efficiency and hygiene.
Faruk Ahmed, Senior Jail Superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, noted the positive impact of the new system on food preparation, with special meal allocations for notable occasions. Inmates are also being trained in manufacturing clothing, footwear, and bakery products while participating in organized sports and cultural programs.
The government is also addressing the welfare of prison officials, with lifetime ration facilities approved for retired guards and enhanced recognition for exceptional contributions to prison security and disaster response.
A zero-tolerance policy against drug activities has been adopted, supported by the procurement of a drug-testing machine for the Prison Headquarters. Environmental initiatives have led to the planting of 18,000 trees at various jails, contributing to a healthier and eco-friendly environment.
The Department of Prisons aims to build a modern correctional service through merit-based promotions, professional training, and a focus on environmentally sustainable prison management. The overarching goal is to improve public perception, ensure skilled and professional prison staff, and offer genuine rehabilitation opportunities for inmates.
New prisons are set to be constructed to alleviate overcrowding and enhance management capacity, as part of the ongoing efforts to transform Bangladesh's prison system into a more transparent, accountable, and humane correctional service.
