Dhaka:The government has postponed a proposal to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) directly from Japan's JERA Global Markets Pte Ltd (JERAGM), awaiting legal examination by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the decision was made during the 35th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Saturday. The meeting, presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, included a single proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division for discussion.

The proposal sought preliminary approval to acquire LNG from JERAGM using the direct procurement method as outlined in Section 68 of the Public Procurement Act, 2006, and Rule 99(2) of the Public Procurement Rules, 2025. It also included the endorsement of the finalized formats for the short-term LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) and the term sheet between Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) and JERAGM.

The committee concluded that the proposal would be reconsidered after receiving legal vetting from the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division. No final approval was granted for the LNG purchase or the signing of the agreements during the meeting.
