RANGPUR: Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust (BJWT) and former President of BFUJ, Muhammad Abdullah, announced that the interim government is actively working to ensure the protection of professional journalists. He emphasized the BJWT’s commitment to supporting journalists and their families without compromising on transparency and impartiality. Assistance will be provided only to those who genuinely deserve it, he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Abdullah made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at the BJWT’s welfare grant cheques distribution ceremony for journalists from various districts of the Rangpur division. The event was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, accompanied by a views-sharing meeting titled ‘Things to be done for the financial security and welfare of journalists,’ chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal.
Abdullah further stated that no additional obstacles are being imposed on independent journalism. A decisio
n has been made to repeal the Cyber Security Act, and the obligation for private television channels to broadcast news on BTV has been lifted. Decisions regarding participation in TV talk shows are no longer externally dictated.
He also highlighted that Information Advisor Md Nahid Islam has taken multiple initiatives for journalist welfare. The BJWT is developing a new plan to boost the welfare and financial security of journalists, including a scholarship program for their children. Additionally, there are instructions to include indigent and senior journalists in a monthly allowance scheme.
Abdullah stressed that individuals who have corrupted journalism and tarnished the journalistic community during times of fascism would be held accountable. At the event, 24 donation cheques were distributed to journalists from different districts within the Rangpur division.
The event was moderated by Rangpur Journalists’ Union General Secretary Sarkar Mazharul Mannan, with Union President Salequzzaman Salek as a sp
ecial guest. Other speakers included Dinajpur Journalists’ Union President GM Hiru, Rangpur Sommilito Journalists Samaj Member-secretary Liaqat Ali Badal, and several other prominent figures from the journalistic community.
