Dhaka: Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain today announced that the government has recommended the Bangladesh Navy to operate the Chittagong Port New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) for the upcoming six months. This decision was disclosed during a meeting with journalists following discussions on Chittagong Port Management at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chittagong Port Authority was authorized to manage the Chittagong Port NCT during an Advisory Council meeting held the previous day. The government considers the Bangladesh Navy as a suitable operator for the NCT over the specified period, ensuring that current employment at the terminal will not be affected. The Navy may also collaborate with previous terminal operators if necessary.
The adviser emphasized that the operation of the port will not be outsourced to foreign companies at the expense of national interests. He reassured the public that no agreements have been made with foreign entities concerning the Chittagong Port. The government is committed to improving living standards and fostering national development through strategic initiatives.
Globally, efficient seaport management by companies like DP World and AD Port in Europe serves as a model. The adviser highlighted the need to inject more dynamism into Chittagong Port's operations to boost the nation's import and export activities. The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is actively working towards achieving international standards in port operations.
Preliminary talks with Dubai Port World regarding NCT Terminal operations are underway, with prospects of allowing them to manage the Chittagong Port under CPA's oversight for a fixed term. This partnership aims to enhance port efficiency, reduce unloading times, and accommodate larger ships, ultimately increasing container handling capacity by 15-20 percent annually.
The adviser clarified that existing agreements with Saif Powertech will remain unaffected. Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Chairman of Chittagong Port, was in attendance at the meeting.
