Dhaka: The government today declared that a weeklong holiday will be observed from May 25 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Emergency services, however, will continue to operate during this period.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement was made by the public administration ministry, stating that all government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, and private offices nationwide will be closed from Monday, May 25, 2026, to Sunday, May 31, 2026. To accommodate the extended holiday, the routine weekend will be adjusted, with offices remaining open on Saturday, May 23, 2026, and the following day.
The notification was issued under the Rules of Business, which outlines the allocation of responsibilities among different ministries and divisions. It clarified that emergency services, including hospitals, utilities, fire services, ports, cleaning services, telecommunications, and postal services, would be exempt from the holiday schedule.
Employees involved in these essential services, particularly those in medical roles and those transporting medical equipment and medicines, will not be included in the Eid holiday. The Supreme Court and Bangladesh Bank are expected to provide specific directives regarding judicial activities and banking operations during this period.
The decision to allocate Eid holidays in private sector industrial establishments, factories, and institutions has been delegated to the ministry of labour and employment, in line with the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006.
