Chattogram: The government has initiated efforts to produce wooden products as substitutes for single-use plastics, as stated by Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan. The Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC), operating under the Ministry of Environment, will spearhead the manufacturing of these wooden items utilizing eco-friendly technology.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana made these remarks during a discussion with officials and employees of BFIDC in the port city. She emphasized the importance of enhancing expertise in sustainable wood production and processing to ensure the optimal use of forest resources. Rizwana highlighted that BFIDC should prioritize research to establish sustainable management practices, as the responsible use of renewable resources will define the future of the forest industry.
The meeting was attended by BFIDC Chairman Md. Nasir Uddin, Chattogram Regional Forest Conservator Molla Rezaul Karim, Bangladesh Forest Academy Director Md. Aminul Islam, BFIDC General Manager Jahan Ara, and Chattogram Rubber Division General Manager A.M. Shahjahan Sarker. They discussed the challenges and potential of the forest industry, underscored the need for policy support from the government, and shared their views on prospective initiatives.
Earlier, Rizwana visited the BFIDC industrial unit at Kalurghat, Chattogram. She also toured the Forest Academy in Chattogram and instructed the authorities to provide updated training to forest officials.
Later, at another program at the Central Shaheed Minar of Chittagong University, the adviser stressed the importance of conducting research in various fields, particularly in science and social sciences, for societal benefit. The Jamal Nazrul Islam Mathematics and Physical Science Research Center organized the event as part of the ‘Chattogram Research and Innovation Fair-2025’. The function was presided over by CU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yahya Akhtar, with Pro-Vice-Chancellors Shamim Uddin Khan and Prof. Kamal Uddin, along with other notable academicians and trustees, addressing the function.
