Dhaka: German Ambassador Dr. Rdiger Lotz has emphasized the importance of Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic transition, asserting that next year’s national election will have regional implications as a “powerful signal” amidst global democratic challenges.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ambassador expressed confidence that Bangladesh’s return to electoral democracy would capture regional attention due to its strategic importance, youthful population, and political significance. He remarked, “This transition is very important for Bangladesh. The country is returning to democracy next year… one of the biggest democratic elections in the world with around 127 million people voting.”

The envoy highlighted the regional impact of Bangladesh’s renewed democratic path, particularly among young people in South Asia, and praised the engagement of all stakeholders in preparing for the polls. He noted the commitment observed among political parties, the Election Commission, and interim authorities, emphasizing the need for free, fair, and participatory elections.

The Ambassador welcomed Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’s call for a “joyful election” and expressed optimism about a fair electoral process. He acknowledged the interim government’s role in maintaining stability, implementing institutional reforms, and stabilizing the economy during a challenging period.

Dr. Lotz also discussed the administration’s efforts in judicial and labor reforms, while noting that major reforms in the legal system and other areas remain pending. He commended the interim government’s consensus-building efforts through initiatives like the July Charter and called for long-term political commitment to ensure continuity after elections.

On the international front, the Ambassador indicated that the European Union is likely to deploy a substantial election observation mission to Bangladesh, contingent on a formal invitation from the government. Regarding Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ fleet renewal, he mentioned ongoing discussions between Airbus and Boeing, stressing the importance of fair deals and Bangladeshi authorities’ decision-making.

The Ambassador highlighted Bangladesh’s potential for attracting more German investment due to its impressive growth rates and strategic location. He emphasized the need for improvements in customs procedures, infrastructure, and legal certainty to remain competitive with regional peers.

He pointed to pharmaceuticals, logistics, aviation, and medical equipment as promising sectors for German engagement. On green energy, he noted cooperation potential in solar and wind energy projects, aligning with environmental improvement goals.

Dr. Lotz also addressed Bangladesh’s pursuit of EU GSP+ benefits post-LDC graduation in 2026, underlining the need for sustained reforms in human rights, labor rights, environmental protection, and good governance. He commended Bangladesh’s efforts in hosting Rohingya refugees and called for continued international support and pressure on Myanmar.

Acknowledging long visa waiting times, the Ambassador mentioned ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and modernize the process. He expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh-Germany relations, citing opportunities for deepening political ties, expanding economic cooperation, and facilitating mobility.
