Dhaka: Business leaders today received an assurance that gas and electricity supplies to industries will return to the previous level from tomorrow night, as the government moves to address the recent energy situation. FBCCI Administrator Md Fazlul Hoque disclosed the assurance while briefing journalists after a nearly three-hour meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the business leaders at the Bangladesh Secretariat today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the assurance signifies a significant relief for industries that have been grappling with the energy crisis since it emerged in August. Fazlul Hoque emphasized the importance of reverting to the pre-crisis situation, highlighting the adverse effects the energy shortage has had not only on businesses and industries but also on society at large.
The meeting saw participation from representatives of 21 business organizations, including the BGMEA, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ICCB, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, BTMA, and BKMEA. Prime Minister's Adviser and Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin also briefed journalists on the discussions that took place.
Key issues discussed included business and trade, employment, and industrialization, with a particular focus on electricity, gas, energy, and mineral resources. The government has initiated several long-term plans to mitigate the power crisis, including the construction of five terminals, as part of efforts to build a sustainable energy system.
Mahdi Amin pointed out that the current government is working on resolving the energy crisis that has accumulated over the past 16 years. The government is focusing on creating an integrated, production-oriented energy system, prioritizing solar power, and striving for self-sufficiency in the electricity sector. He expressed optimism about the diversification and self-sufficiency of the power sector in the future.
