Noakhali: Law enforcement agencies have arrested a fugitive convict, sentenced to life imprisonment, after 29 years in Noakhali district. The arrested was identified as Md Yasin, 55, son of late Atiq Ullah, a resident of Dakshin Deliai village under Chatkhil upazila in the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Yasin was arrested from the Chaumuhani Bus Stand area in Begumganj upazila on Monday evening during a special drive conducted by Chatkhil Police Station, with assistance from RAB-11, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Firoz Uddin Chowdhury of Chatkhil Police Station. He was produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at noon today.
Police reports indicate that on February 25, 1996, a Sessions Judge Court sentenced Yasin to life imprisonment and a fine of Taka 10,000 in connection with a murder case filed with Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station. Since the verdict, he had been absconding and had taken shelter in various locations under different identities to avoid arrest.
"Following his arrest, Yasin admitted during interrogation that he was a fugitive and had been living in disguise for the past 29 years," the OC stated. Further legal proceedings are underway.
