Dhaka:A French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet emphasized that strategic autonomy empowers countries to make independent decisions based on their interests while fostering cooperation rather than confrontation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Séré-Charlet spoke at the Bay of Bengal Conversation, highlighting the importance of countries retaining the ability to make strategic decisions independently amid various security, climate, and economic challenges.

The ambassador explained that strategic autonomy is not meant to oppose others but to ensure nations can decide autonomously. He stressed that this approach does not mean isolation but rather encourages engagement in international partnerships and negotiations based on a country's priorities.

Séré-Charlet noted that strategic autonomy has been a long-standing element of France's approach and is increasingly being integrated into Europe's strategic considerations. He underscored the need for Europe to establish itself as a 'partnering power,' focusing on cooperation over confrontation.

He further discussed how recent changes in international relations have allowed middle powers to evaluate their strengths and build constructive partnerships. He cited France's historical engagement with the former Soviet Union as an example of maintaining independence without alignment.

The ambassador pointed out that the current international environment is complex, with emerging tensions even among major powers, necessitating careful consideration of relationships by middle powers. He stressed the importance of working collectively to tackle global crises like climate change and geopolitical pressures.

Séré-Charlet called for increased investment, particularly with vulnerable countries, and stronger engagement with partners committed to transparency and multilateralism. He emphasized the need to share capabilities and build sustainable relationships while remaining competitive in technology and economic arenas.

He concluded by affirming France and Europe's commitment to building strong and reliable global partnerships based on cooperation, shared values, and sovereign decision-making.
