Federal parliamentarians have underlined the need to liberate the Prime Minister, country’s chief executive, from the work burden of numerous universities.

The Prime Minister should not be designated with the responsibilities of Chancellor of all the universities, they noted.

In today’s discussion on the draft bill designating PM as the Chancellor of the Martyr Dasharath Chand Health Science University, members of the National Assembly Legislative Management Committee said the PM should not be entrusted with the responsibility as the Chancellor in several places since the government head has to be engaged in other numerous crucial business of the State.

Committee Chair Jayanti Rai opined that the PM should not be overburdened with responsibilities of chancellor of additional universities and academies.

The bill has proposed provisions in which Prime Minister shall be the Chancellor of the University; Vice-Chancellor shall be the chief of the University and Chancellor shall preside over the convocation ce
remony.

The bill has also proposed Minister for Education as the Pro-Chancellor of the University.

However, the committee meeting after two days discussion and acting on the recommendations of the ministry’s officials came to a consensus to continue the previous provisions having PM as the Chancellor.

Now the country has a total of 13 universities and seven academies where the PM serves as the Chancellor.
