Fraud Ring Member Arrested for Impersonating Army Officer

Gaibandha:A member of a fraud ring has been arrested by the Special Response Battalion (SRB)-13 from Dakshin Dhanghara village under Sadar police station of Gaibandha. The arrest took place last night.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the detainee, identified as Md Afzal Khan alias Momin, 55, is accused of swindling money by posing as a high-ranking army officer. He is the son of the late Jannat Khan from the same village.

The SRB-13 press release stated that Md Afzal Khan had been committing fraud using the name, rank, and uniformed photographs of high-ranking Bangladesh Army officers serving in the SRB. He operated from various locations, including Rangpur and Dhaka, using SIM cards registered to others to contact individuals via mobile phone.

The arrested individual allegedly lured people with promises of government jobs, including positions in the Bangladesh Army, and subsequently blackmailed them to extort money.

Md Afzal Khan was apprehended by an SRB-13 team from Gaibandha Camp at his home in Dakshin Dhanghara village at 9:10 pm on Sunday. During the raid, three mobile phones and five SIM cards used in the fraudulent activities were recovered from his possession.

Following the arrest, a case was filed under the CyberSecurity Act, 2026. The elite force then handed over the arrested individual and the seized evidence to Gaibandha Sadar police station for further legal action.
