Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced four individuals to life imprisonment for the assault of a young girl at Kamrangirchar in Dhaka in 2009. Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Munshi Md Mashier Rahman delivered the verdict.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the individuals convicted are Shahidul Islam, Saiful Islam, Nizam, and Manir Hossain alias Sentu. Notably, Saiful was tried in absentia. Alongside the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Tk one lakh on each convict, with an additional one-year jail term for non-payment. The court also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka to collect the fine by liquidating the convicts’ assets.

The prosecution detailed that the 25-year-old victim, accompanied by a friend, visited Beribadah at Ashrafabad in Kamrangirchar on September 25, 2009. When her friend departed, leaving her alone, the convicts abducted the girl onto a boat and assaulted her. Subsequently, they confined her in a room belonging to an individual named Salam Contractor. Upon learning of the incident, the girl’s parents rescued her and took her to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

A case was registered with Kamrangirchar Police Station, and Sub-inspector Shafiqul Islam Shikdar submitted charges against the accused on October 31, 2010.
