Faridpur: A Faridpur court has delivered a verdict sentencing four individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of a man in 2018, attributed to previous enmity. The judgment was passed by Faridpur Special District and Sessions Judge Md Sharif Uddin.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the convicted individuals are Shahjahan Matubbar, 36, Faruk Sheikh, 35, Chandu Sheikh, 22, and Farida Begum, 30, all residents of Jhaukhola village in the Sadar upazila of Faridpur. Notably, Farida Begum was tried in absentia, with the court issuing an arrest warrant against her. Additionally, each convict has been fined Tk 20,000, with a stipulation of an additional year in jail if the fine remains unpaid.
The court further imposed a seven-year prison sentence under another section of the case, accompanied by a Tk 5,000 fine for each convict. Failing to pay this fine would result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The prosecution elaborated on the events leading to the conviction, stating that Hasan Sheikh, an employee at Faridpur Sishu Park, vanished on May 9, 2018. His disappearance prompted the lodging of a general diary with the Sadar Police Station. Subsequently, police discovered Hasan's body four days later in a sugarcane field in the Jhaukhola area. Iman Uddin, Hasan's father, subsequently filed a case with Kotwali Police Station.
The case statement revealed that Hasan had been embroiled in a dispute with several local youths months before the incident. A village arbitration meeting, facilitated by the local chairman, had previously penalized the youths for assaulting Hasan. Following these events, the convicts allegedly called Hasan out and murdered him.
