Dhaka: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr M. Enamul Haque passed away at a hospital here in the early hours of today. He was 88 years old and is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter, and numerous relatives, colleagues, and admirers.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the namaz-e-janaza for Dr Haque was held after Zuhr prayers at the SI Shiru Mia auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines. The ceremony was attended by Additional Inspectors General of Police (Add'l IGPs), heads of various police units in Dhaka, police officers and members, along with his former colleagues and family members. Following the prayers, Add'l IGP (Admin) A.K.M. Awlad Hossain placed floral wreaths on the coffin on behalf of IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir. Floral tributes were also paid by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the Bangladesh Police Service Association, and the Retired Police Officers Welfare Association.
Dr Haque was given an official funeral in recognition of his service. He served as the IGP from October 16, 1991, to July 8, 1992. Known for his professionalism and dedication, he held several key positions, including Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah.
Born in 1938 in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district, Dr Haque had a strong academic background. He completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in History from Rajshahi University in 1956, earned an LLB from Dhaka University in 1968, and received a PhD in Public Administration from the University of New Orleans in 1993. He also pursued diplomas and other degrees from various esteemed institutions globally.
Dr Haque was a member of the Bangladesh Law Commission and participated in several national and international forums, including serving as Bangladesh's only elected member of Interpol from 1988 to 1992. An accomplished author, he published around 14 books and contributed articles to renowned newspapers and journals.
He will be laid to rest at his family cemetery in Godagari, Rajshahi. The IGP, Md Ali Hossain Fakir, expressed deep sorrow at his passing, seeking eternal peace for the departed and extending condolences to the bereaved family. Similarly, the Bangladesh Police Service Association conveyed their sympathy and prayers for Dr Haque's family.
