Rangpur: A court in Rangpur has granted a three-day remand to Md Shariful Islam, the former proctor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in connection with the Shaheed Abu Sayeed murder case. The decision was made following the arrest of Shariful Islam by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in the Alamnagar area on Monday night. Islam, who is an Associate Professor in the department of political science at BRUR, is accused in the high-profile murder case. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Investigating Officer of the case, ABM Jakir Hossain, who is also the PBI Superintendent of Police, presented Shariful Islam before the Rangpur Metropolitan Cognizance Court with a request for a five-day remand. However, Judge Md Asaduzzaman granted a three-day remand after the hearing. The murder of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, a student of the Department of English at BRUR, occurred during a student movement against discrimination on July 16. This incident significantly intensified the movement, leading to the ousting of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5. The case was formally initiated by Abu Sayeed's elder brother, Ramzan Ali, who filed a lawsuit naming 17 individuals, including high-profile figures such as the former IGP, with 30 to 35 unnamed persons also implicated. A supplementary statement later added the names of others, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former BRUR Proctor Shariful Islam, among others. The PBI has continued to investigate the case diligently. Previously, dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Ali and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy were apprehended in connection with the murder. The PBI SP also made a request to the court to restrict the foreign travel of the defendants to ensure a thorough investigation. Subsequently, Judge Md Asaduzzaman ordered a travel ban on the accused on October 1, prohibiting them from leaving the country. The travel ban applies to several individuals, including former Rangpur Range DIG Abdul Baten, former Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman, and other police and BRUR officials, along with BRUR Chhatra League leaders. The investigation into the murder case is ongoing, and the authorities are committed to uncovering all those involved.
