Rangpur: Police have arrested former vice-president of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central committee, Monwarul Islam Masud, in connection with a case of attempted murder and an attack on an anti-discrimination student movement. Masud was apprehended from the Keramatia Jame Mosque area in Rangpur city around 11 pm on Sunday, as confirmed by officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, Md Ataur Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Monwarul Islam Masud, son of Md Shahidul Islam, resides in Jagjiban village in ward 9 of Annnodanagar union under Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur. The arrest was made following a case filed against Masud for attacking an anti-discrimination student movement and attempting to murder Joynal Abedin Bappi and Mamunur Rashid.
Masud held several significant positions, including assistant secretary of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, organizing secretary of Dhaka University BCL, and a member of the Rangpur district Awami League convening committee. Following the fall of the Awami League regime during a mass uprising on August 5 last year, Masud went into hiding.
The OC stated that after completing the legal process, Masud was presented before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which subsequently ordered his detention in jail.
