Rampura: The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today submitted the formal charge in a case of crimes against humanity filed over police firing on a student hanging from the cornice of a building at Rampura in the capital on July 19, 2024, during the July mass uprising. Prosecutor Faruk Ahammed and Saimum Reza Talukder filed the formal charge at the office of the ICT prosecutor this morning. Five people, including former Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Habibur Rahman, have been accused in the case.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case documents reveal that on July 19, 2024, victim Amir Hossain was returning home after offering Jummah prayer when he was caught in the crossfire between protesters and police. As the law enforcers began firing gunshots, Amir sought refuge on the fourth floor of an under-construction building.

Amid the chaos, police pursued the protesters and ascended to the fourth floor, where they confronted Amir. The officers allegedly coerced him to jump down at gunpoint, and a policeman fired shots to intimidate him. In fear, Amir Hossain leapt and clung to a rod from the building’s edge.

A policeman from the third floor then allegedly fired six shots at Amir, striking him in the legs. When the police eventually retreated, Amir managed to jump to the third floor, although he was bleeding profusely.

After nearly three hours, Amir was rescued by a fellow student and two doctors, who transported him to a local hospital before he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite the severity of his injuries, Amir Hossain survived the ordeal.

In addition to this incident, the accused face charges for the deaths of two individuals in the same area on that day.
