Manchester: Phil Foden delivered an outstanding performance by scoring twice, and Erling Haaland netted against his former club as Manchester City triumphed over Borussia Dortmund with a 4-1 victory, elevating them to fourth place in the Champions League table.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Foden’s impressive finishes came at a crucial time, serving as a reminder to England manager Thomas Tuchel of his capabilities before Tuchel announces his final squad of the year. City manager Pep Guardiola expressed satisfaction with Foden’s performance, highlighting the player’s return to form after challenges with fitness and performance last season.

Haaland, who was named captain for the match, demonstrated leadership and scored his 27th goal of the season for both club and country. While Waldemar Anton managed a consolation goal for Dortmund during a late rally, Rayan Cherki secured the final goal for City in stoppage time. This marked Dortmund’s first European defeat of the campaign, placing them in 14th position.

Guardiola made tactical changes by resting Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias in anticipation of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad Stadium. Despite Dortmund’s strong record this season, City’s attacking prowess was evident, maintaining the trend of Premier League dominance in the Champions League. Notably, all six English clubs participating are among the top 12 in the competition.

Guardiola has emphasized the need for other forwards to support Haaland in scoring, and Foden’s recent form is promising. Reflecting on his challenges last season, Foden highlighted the importance of teamwork to regain their previous performance levels.

Foden’s initial goal came after a promising start from Dortmund, followed by Haaland’s contribution, assisted by Jeremy Doku. The match’s outcome could influence Tuchel’s decision regarding Foden’s inclusion in the national squad, given his current form.

As City prepared for their upcoming match against Liverpool, Dortmund managed to score through Anton, but City’s substitutions helped maintain control. Cherki’s late goal sealed the victory, marking his first in the Champions League.
